Lady Warriors Split with No. 25 Mustangs

FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University’s softball team earned a split with Morningside College on Friday afternoon at Christensen Field. The Warriors took the first game 8-5 before dropping game two 11-3 in six innings. Midland (20-11, 7-3) sits in third place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings behind Morningside (20-9, 8-2) and Northwestern (23-6, 8-2), whom they also recently split a pair of games with.

Midland’s offense exploded midway through the first game as they sent nine batters to the plate in the 4th inning and then eight batters in the 5th. That resulted in seven runs, four in the 4th and three in the 5th, and staked an 8-2 lead.

Bailey Hartman and Angela Brazil each had a pair of RBI in the rally. Hartman had a sacrifice hit in the 4th and a single in the 5th to bring in Sierra Athow, both times. Brazil hit a triple in the 4th that plated Andrea Cespedes and Alexis Ramirez.

Jaylee Hinrichs was stellar in the circle against the potent Morningside offense. She struck out 10 batters in the complete game win while allowing four earned runs and seven hits. It marks her ninth game this season with double-digit strikeouts. Morningside came into the game averaging over six runs per game.

Game two saw the Mustangs’ bats come alive as they blitzed the Warriors for eight runs in the 3rd inning. They had eight straight players reach base and later score as they belted a pair of home runs over the right field fence.

Midland would get a pair back in the bottom of the inning as Katlin Anders tripled and drove in Nicole O’Haver and then scored herself as Sierra Athow singled on a hard hit ball to the shortstop. The two team would trade runs in the 5th, Midland’s coming off an Anders single to center that plated Tammie Yoshimori, before Morningside ended the game via mercy-rule with a pair of unmatched runs in the top of the sixth.

Madison Plummer pitched 5.1 innings in the loss. She gave up five earned runs while allowing seven hits.

Next up for Midland is a road doubleheader at Concordia (16-14, 5-5) on Tuesday, April 17th. The Bulldogs and the Warriors will square off at 5:00 p.m. in Seward, Nebraska at Plum Creek Park.
