Lady Warriors Win Conference Tennis Opener

SEWARD, Neb. – Midland University’s women’s tennis team picked up wins in two key singles matches Wednesday to earn a 5-4 victory over Concordia University in the Great Plains Athletic Conference season opener for the Lady Warriors. Midland improved to 7-7 overall with the win on the Bulldog Tennis Courts.

“We came out ready to play. We knew it was going to a very close dual,” Coach John Steinke said. “The GPAC will be very close between all the teams. This will not be our last 5-4 match of the year.”

Junior Annie Allmand and sophomore Danielle Martin won their singles matches to secure the victory. Allmand won her No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-2 while Martin was the No. 6 singles match 6-0, 7-5.

“In singles, we had to earn it,” Steinke said. “We lost three three-setters that were all very close. Annie and Danielle played well to clinch the match.”

Midland swept doubles to open the match. Allmand and sophomore Christina Villareal fought off six match points to win their No. 2 doubles match 9-7. Freshmen Gretchen Cooper and Sarah Wood scored an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, and Martin and junior Carolyn Howton took an early lead and never looked back in an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

“Doubles was really important, and we were able to get the sweep,” Steinke said. “Gretchen and Sarah played one of their best matches of the year at one. I was proud of how we took ownership of doubles.”

It was Midland’s first victory over Concordia since the 2005 season.
