HASTINGS, Neb. – Midland University’s cheer team won the 2018 Great Plains Athletic Conference competitive cheer championship on Saturday at Lynn Farrell Arena. Overall, it was the fourth conference title for the Warriors.
“We are glad to be GPAC champions, but we want to make sure we are improving our skills and not having any more mistakes in our performances,” Coach Kevin Ellstrand said.
Judges awarded the Warriors 66.50 points for the first-place finish. Midland was followed by Hastings with 65.13 and Doane with 61.75.
This is the second year competitive cheer has been recognized as official championship sport by the conference. Prior to that, the sport was in “invitational status.”
“We are still trying to put together a complete routine with 16 on the floor,” Ellstrand said. “As we move into regionals in the next couple of weeks, I am looking to my vets to help this group stay focused and positive.”
Midland will compete in the NAIA National Northwest Qualifier on February 23 in Sioux City, Iowa, with an eye on moving on to the NAIA Competitive Cheer National Championship March 9-10 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
