Warriors Fall to No. 8 Broncos in Battle of Top GPAC Teams

FREMONT, Neb. – In a battle of the top two teams in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, Midland University came up short in their attempt to take down No.8-ranked Hastings College on Tuesday night. The Broncos were able to net a goal in each half for the 2-0 win.

Early on the two defenses stood their ground not allowing their counterpart many scoring opportunities. The Broncos broke the seal though in the 28th minutes as they were able to get the ball past the Warriors on a second surge after Midland stifled their first attempt.

The Warriors looked to clear the ball up the far sideline but it was intercepted by a streaking Bronco and then crossed over to the near side and past a diving Shazz Heale.

The second half saw things get a lot more physical and the officials took note of it as they handed out multiple cards. Overall there were 12 cards issued, 11 in the second stanza. Midland received four yellows and a red while the Broncos had five yellow and had two players sent off.

Hastings’ second goal, which put the game away, came after a throw in and run out. The Broncos got behind the defense and after a cross to the far side drew the keeper out that way a flick to the middle found their teammate for the goal in the 64th minute.

Both teams had equal shots on the night as they each took four shots, all on goal.

Midland (7-5, 3-1 GPAC) will look to rebound this weekend as they travel take on Dordt College (7-7, 1-4 GPAC). Game time between the two squads is set for 3:15 p.m. in Sioux Center, Iowa.
